This week in Automotive: Globalization in China will create a new avenue of opportunities around autonomy and electrification

Latest Industry Insights from Draup Braindesk

Autonomous vehicles (AV) are transforming the business models of legacy auto players, which is expected to create opportunities worth trillions in the upcoming decade. Billions of dollars are being invested by Hi-tech companies, startups, OEMs, and Tier-Is to build a niche and full-stack AV capabilities.

  • Honda has created a strong partner ecosystem with GM, Ushr and Sensetime to develop navigation, object detection, and self-driving platform capabilities.
  • Marelli partnered with Xenomatix to deliver modular LiDAR system solutions to meet future global automotive needs.

Cost-efficient EV solutions and innovative business models like battery swapping have emerged to enable widespread adoption of electrification. OEMs and Tier-Is are looking for the key battery and as-a-service business partners that can reduce their time-to-market.

  • Honda is leveraging EV expertise from Panasonic, CATL, Moixa, and Tencent to catch up with the EV market’s leading players.
  • Tier-Is like MagnaContinental, and Bosch highly focus on Modular EV platform architecture, Fast/super-chargers, and Silicon Carbide (SiC) technologies to develop smart EV components.

Chinese OEMs are racing to launch their EV and AV solutions to local and emerging markets. This globalization intent is expected to open a door of immense R&D and technology opportunities for TSPs with Chinese players.

  • Toyota partnered with FAW GroupDongfeng MotorBeijing Automotive, GAC, and Beijing SinoHytec to launch a China joint venture to develop fuel cell systems.
  • BAIC Group acquired ~21.26% shares of UCAR to jointly develop intelligent vehicles tailored for mobility service or available for swapping batteries.
