This week in Telecom: Telecom companies invest in SD-WAN, network encryption, and next-generation firewalls to improve cloud security

Companies will have more options for fast-moving, streaming communications, driving events, and smart networking with the introduction of 5G networks. 

  • Google Cloud partnered with Nokia to bring new solutions for communications service providers (CSPs) that modernize their network infrastructures, build on a cloud-native 5G Core, and develop the network edge as a business services platform for enterprises. 
  • ZTE and China UnionPay Data (CUP Data) have signed a cooperation agreement and jointly unveiled the first 5G Messaging OpenLab of the financial industry in Shanghai. 
  • Etisalat has selected Ericsson for the 5G network core expansion and implement Ericsson’s Advanced 5G Radio and 5G Core network, including User Data Management (UDM). 

As Telecom providers depend on Network Virtualization-related engagements, the NFV/SDN segment is expected to develop. 

  • Huawei Partnered with Telefonica to test Huawei’s T-SDN (Transport Software-Defined Network) software solution and improve network operations in the photonic mesh. 
  • Emtel, a Mauritius-based telco has partnered with NEC XON to deploy the biggest SD-WAN in that country, which has reduced the corporate customer’s connectivity costs by between 30% to 40%, together with the provision of a secured network. 
  • Cisco partnered with India’s Bharti Airtel to deploy its new converged SDN transport infrastructure for 5G and planned to deploy a 100 Gb/s IP and optical network for India’s Bharti Airtel. 

Telecom companies are focusing on IoT security management and IoT network connectivity. 

  • Nokia collaborated with StarHub to introduce new digital services and encourage industry adoption of advanced IoT solutions and deploy a cloud-native 5G core network that will power device connectivity at scale and usher in game-changing mobility solutions. 
  • Cisco acquired Fluidmesh Networks to accelerates Cisco’s industrial IoT business and enable wireless deployments within industrial environments. 
  • Verizon launched the ThingSpace platform, a new easy-to-use digital portal that helps customers quickly purchase, activate, and manage customized IoT solutions. It includes NB-IoT, LTEM, and 5G mobile edge computing (MEC) technologies. 

SD-WAN Security, Network Security and Next-Generation Firewall are the widely concentrated areas of Telecom Companies. 

  • AT&T SD-WAN integrated with Cisco Security Capabilities to protect Cloud, Internet, and WAN Traffic using Cisco Secure SD-WAN technology. 
  • Juniper partnered with Nutanix to bring new levels of simplicity to the secure and automated multi-cloud. The integration of Juniper’s Contrail Networking and Nutanix Acropolis HCI Platform gives the freedom to run workloads in any environment, operating environments as a single cloud by providing end-to-end policy and control.  
  • Ericsson partnered with the Erillisverkot Group to add Ericsson Security Manager for the 5G public safety network. Ericsson Security Manager will enhance the control and visibility of network security for Erillisverkot’s 4G and 5G networks. The solution provides security automation, compliance monitoring, and security analytics. 

Telecom companies are focusing on Network Optimization and Data Analytics engagements to better understand network efficiency and take advantage of the actionable intelligence that big data offers. 

  • ZTE launches Intelligent Orchestration Radio Network Solution, which employs an innovative AI-based intelligent orchestration engine to enable MNOs to achieve maximum value from 5G networks. 
  • Huawei launched ARM-based CPU to boost the development of computing in big data, distributed storage and ARM-native application scenarios. 
  • Ericsson’s Artificial Intelligence (AI) & Analytics Hub in Egypt has achieved a key milestone by shipping its first Cognitive Software to be used by Ericsson customers worldwide to design and optimize networks.
