Semiconductor Manufacturing International Corp. said its chairman, Zhou Zixue, has resigned due to health reasons after serving in the position for more than six years. Zhou will continue to serve as an executive director of the Shanghai- and Hong Kong-listed company, SMIC said in a filing posted Friday. Gao Yonggang, the chief financial officer of the Chinese chipmaker, has been appointed as the acting chairman of the company, the filing shows. Read More>>

Samsung raises foundry chip prices for Qualcomm, Tesla    
Samsung Electronics has notified key clients of price increases of up to 20 percent for contract chip fabrication, following hikes by Taiwanese rival TSMC that are some of the steepest in its history. The maximum rate suggested is 20 percent, but specific rates for each company could differ depending on the type of chip after each party negotiates. Despite Samsung’s efforts, TSMC has a commanding dominance of the foundry business with a 52.9 percent market share in the second quarter. Read More>>
AMD beats Intel in powering a massive internet network    
Cloudflare, one of the largest networks powering the internet today, announced that it would continue using AMD’s Epyc server CPUs instead of Intel Xeon for its next generation of servers. For these new servers, Cloudflare is moving from second-generation Epyc Rome processors to third-generation Epyc Milan processors. Intel has won a major contract to design and build electrical chips for the US Department of Defense. Intel will work in partnership with technology giants like IBM, Cadence, Synopsys and other companies on the RAMP-C project. China’s SMIC to build a GigaFab for USD 8.87 Bn     
The company announced plans to build China’s first GigaFab, a 300 mm production facility with a planned capacity of around 100,000 wafer starts per month (WSPM). The new fab will be located near Shanghai, in the Lingang Free Trade Zone (FTZ), and will be built as a partnership between SMIC and the Shanghai Municipal Peoples Government.
