Latest Industry Insights from Draup Braindesk

Insights: European Semiconductor and Design Landscape Ecosystem

Europe is enhancing the semiconductor industry through investments to get a stronger market  position by 2030 and continues to invest money & resources into development activities

  • Europe’s increased investments in memory devices and integrated circuits components are driving technological components in the semiconductor sector. Partnerships with non-European providers and the EU’s new initiative have the potential to create a global powerhouse.

  • Rising demand from electronics appliances such as smartphones and the proliferation of applications, including the Internet of Things and cloud computing, will play a key factor in the growth of Semiconductors in the Europe Region.

  • Implementation of a 5G network in the region will lead to the increased demand of 5G chips to process data 100 or 200 times faster than current 4G chips, thus increasing the growth of semiconductors in the region.

Market Drivers:

  • Rising Utilization of Markets: The growth of the semiconductor market is attributed to the increasing consumption of consumer electronics and automotive.

  • AI Application in Automotive: Automakers are pushing forward with driverless vehicles, advanced driver assistance systems (ADAS), and graphics processing units (GPUs) which is estimated to boost the semiconductor market size.

  • Changing Functionality of Chipsets: The semiconductor market is being held back by the constantly changing functionality of semiconductor chips and the unique demands of end-users from various industries. The factors such as Power efficiency, unrealistic schedules, and cost-down considerations are hindering the semiconductor market analysis

Market Challenges:

  • The lack of cutting-edge chip designs in the EU directly translates into minuscule demand for cutting-edge contract chip manufacturing.

  • European automakers (particularly Germany), who are suffering badly from the current chip shortage, are pressing strongly for funding production of 300 millimeter and 20 nm chips, which are increasingly used in cars and trucks.

  • Europe would need to expand its manufacturing capacity of mid-level chips before it could achieve a goal of doubling Europe’s share of global semiconductor production to 20% and producing leading-edge 2-nanometer chips by 2030.
