This week in Media & Entertainment: Media entities rush to adopt secure networking protocols to prevent hacking attempts

Latest Industry Insights from Draup Braindesk

Television and OTT

  • As the usage of OTTs and innovative televisions grows, so does the potential for exploiting one or more cyber threat vectors that can be used to launch a targeted cyberattack.

  • The growth of streaming has led to several fake websites claiming to sell Disney+, Netflix, and Hulu, a US-based streaming service, for free.

  • According to cybersecurity company Mimecast, which confirmed the rise of websites impersonating the new streaming service, more than 700 fake websites are mimicking Netflix, and Disney+ signup pages have been generated to collect personal information from customers during the coronavirus lockdown streaming boom.

  • Cybercriminals are looking to take advantage of the increase in television consumption, and binge-watching comes with security risks.

  • Suspicious domains impersonating several streaming giants for nefarious purposes are on the rise. These spoof websites often attract unwitting public members by providing free subscriptions in return for valuable personal details.

Gaming

  • Many gaming companies rushed to set up their new architectures and networks to support their increasing customer base, leaving them exposed to various attack vectors.

  • When online gaming companies quickly moved to the public cloud, the attack surface grew even more prominent.

  • Online games, especially Massive Multi-Player (MMO) games, are subject to numerous attacks from hackers and competitors that attempt to block players1 access to gaming sites and cheat players who can slow down other players1 connections to gain a competitive advantage.

  • Another challenge that online gaming groups face is hacking into games to steal in-game currency.

  • Malicious actors also create alternative versions of games and sell them on third-party app stores that lack the same security standards as the Google Play Store or the iOS App Store.
