HR faces several strategic challenges working in Covid19

Apr 6, 2020

Our analysis shows HR working in Covid19 response groups face several strategic challenges

Many HR leaders are playing a prominent role in Covid19 response.  Some of the HR leaders feel that there are very interesting challenges with existing analytics solutions and HR systems.  These challenges are not new to HR but have been amplified during this crisis:

  • Lack of skills inventory is a huge challenge when it comes to business continuity planning
  • Some of our clients who have huge short term hiring need (bringing in a significant number of customer service reps in bulk for example) really find that the existing systems really do not help in this scenario.
  • People movement modeling – I think in general enterprises have not done a good job of mapping the movement of an employee within the org and thereby lack insights around this (some companies have done this well through their People Analytics function)
  • Many of the outsourcing relationships, directly managed by businesses may potentially change with respect to the dynamics of how it is managed today.  In several situations,  HR has no line of sight on this type of staffing.  This is another key opportunity for HR to play a leadership role.

As a result, we at Draup believe that HR will play a very pivotal role in addressing these challenges.

The great HR and Business Convergence

The Covid19 disaster has brought in significant convergence of HR and Business.  For the first time, I am hearing technology leaders appreciating the role of HR and its leaders.  Remote Workforce Management, Employee Communication, Customer Communication, Outsourcing partners contingency, Employee Productivity and Wellness are some of the key areas where HR and Business are working very closely together.  Many technology conferences and events are opening HR tracks for the first time!

Our informal survey of priorities by industries show heavy emphasis on workforce optimization through upskilling and reskilling

While the current focus for many HR and business leaders is around Covid19 response, specific strategic priorities by industries are also emerging.  Companies are certainly thinking about how they will operate in post covid19 world. Please note that this is an informal not statistically valid  – small sample survey with both HR and Business leaders.  This is brought to you only for giving a sense of what leaders are speculating.
