E.V. Startups have experienced a steep rise in the past few years due to increased environmental concerns and the market shift towards greener mobility. 

  • The electric vehicle startup landscape is vast. It includes companies offering automobile solutions such as electric drive systems and batteries and developing infrastructure for battery charging and vehicle-to-grid network. 
  • With rising concerns for the environment and national governments pushing for greener mobility, electric vehicle startups have seen a boom in the last three years. 
  • Plug and Play Tech Center, Los Angeles Cleantech Incubator, and ClimateLaunchpad are amongst the most active investors by the number of investments. 
  • Commercial vehicles, vehicle-as-a-service, batteries, ride-hailing, and plug-in charging are some of the top business models attracting significant funding. 
  • Automakers are investing heavily in electric vehicle technology, which stands at USD 19 Bn in the United States, USD 21 Bn in China, and USD 52 Bn in Germany (till 2018).  

Startup Stack: E.V. charging solutions, battery development and management, and electric drive systems are the key focus areas for startups to enhance electric mobility. 

  • E.V. Charging Infrastructure – E.V. charging infrastructure encompasses charging stations and charging management software to recharge the electric fleet with intelligent management and connectivity components. 
  • Battery Development – Researchers are extensively involved in developing high-capacity E.V. batteries using graphite anode materials to double the driving range and enable rapid charging to more than 80% capacity in five minutes. 
  • Electric Ridesharing – Ridesharing companies are adopting electrification solutions across their fleets to maximize driving time and revenues. 
  • Automated Battery Swapping – E.V. companies are developing automated battery swapping systems using modular battery packs and replace a depleted battery with a fully charged battery in 10 minutes. 
  • Electrified Powertrain – E.V. powertrain comprises of converter, motor, battery management system, thermal management system, and body control module to deliver the power required to move the wheels.
